If there ever was a heart for our journey, it would be Attapady. This is the pristine region of the Western Ghats where nature and man have lived in perfect harmony for ages.
There has been a history of indigenous farming in the region, with tribal groups like Irulam, Muduga, and Kurumba farming here over the centuries. Very close to nature, they have been sustaining the farming culture traditionally.
For several centuries now, these tribes have been farming ancient millets like ragi, varagu, thinai, and saamai. For generations now, these millets have provided them with nutrition and good health.
What is now worrying about them is the decreasing significance of these grains. With time, the habits of people have been changing; these natural grains started losing significance amidst other foods. With the introduction of foods like rice and wheat in their diets, many nutritious foods lost significance in kitchens.
However, the tribes of Attappadi have been pushing to reintroduce these items, giving them life back. They have been making efforts to revive traditional cultivation to protect both cultural heritage and the biodiversity of the region. They wanted to see the return of a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle.
This inspiration led to the establishment of Hornbill Naturals. From the very beginning, we wanted to support these groups’ strong vision of reviving their conservative practices.
